About the Conference

The Ford and Annie E. Casey Foundations are currently supporting a variety of efforts in the Camden region to promote social equity and mobility, insure responsible redevelopment and relocation, and inform public policy and organizing. These Foundations, among others, have come to believe that blending the current approach to community and workforce development with a regionalist perspective could overcome the obstacles that have confronted community development strategies in the past, as well as contribute to new alliances between those interested in economic vitality, environmental sustainability, and community revival.

The overall goal of the conference was to develop a shared understanding of past accomplishments and current prospects for Camden’s future. After numerous planning discussions, a common thread of interest from various stakeholders involved workforce issues. For this reason, and because this is an emerging element of Camden investments with metropolitan-wide implications, specific attention was paid to workforce development. Specific desired outcomes for the conference were:

  • To learn about the participants’ current efforts that are informed by regional equity/regional responsibility perspectives;
  • To identify what the Camden experience can offer the field and what lessons might be learned from other regional efforts for the work in Camden;
  • To learn about the workforce development strategy that will be supported by Ford, Casey, and others and consider how it will affect and support other Camden efforts;
  • To identify points of intersection and ways to align current efforts in Camden, both among actors on the ground and within partnering foundations.
